Set the hours you work each day in [**Availability**](/go/time/availability). The schedule and time off read these hours. Managers set them for any employee from the same page.

## Set your hours for a day

Use this when a day has no hours yet. Each block of hours is a window with a start time and an end time.

1. Open [**Availability**](/go/time/availability).
2. Click **Add hours** under the day.
3. Set the window's start time.
4. Set the window's end time.
5. Click **Save availability**.

The day shows its total in hours, such as 8h. **Save availability** stays disabled until the hours change.

## Add a second window to a day

Add a window when a day needs a second block, such as hours after a midday break. A new window starts where the last window of the day ends, or at 08:00 on a day with none. It ends at 17:00.

1. Click **Add hours** under the day.
2. Set the new window's start time.
3. Set the new window's end time.
4. Click **Save availability**.

The day total is the sum of all its windows.

> **Note:** Windows on the same day add together. Overlapping hours count twice.

## Remove a window

Remove a window to take those hours off the day.

1. Click the x icon at the right of the window.
2. Click **Save availability**.

The window leaves the day. A day with no windows shows **Closed**.

## Set hours for an employee

Managers set hours for any employee from this page. The page opens on your own hours when you are on the employee list. Otherwise it opens on the first employee.

1. Open [**Availability**](/go/time/availability).
2. Click the employee dropdown in the page header.
3. Click the employee.
4. Set the days and times the same way as for your own hours.
5. Click **Save availability**.

The grid shows the hours of the employee you chose.

> **Warning:** Switching employees discards unsaved changes. Save each employee before you choose the next one.

## Who can edit availability

- Your own hours need an active time tracking profile and edit access to [time tracking](/help/time-tracking/introduction-to-time-tracking). If your profile is inactive, the grid is read-only and **Save availability** is hidden.
- Another employee's hours need full access to time tracking.
- Crew members with assigned-only access see only their own hours, and the employee dropdown is hidden. For what each role can see and change, see [Create and Edit Roles and Permissions](/help/team/roles-and-permissions).

With no employees on the list, the page shows no grid, including for your own hours. Add employees in [Configure Time Tracking Settings](/help/time-tracking/time-tracking-settings) first.

## What availability controls

- Schedule: the weekly working hours used for scheduling. Approved time off overrides them. See [Introduction to the Schedule](/help/schedule/introduction-to-the-schedule).
- Time off: the scheduled minutes for each weekday set the day counts for time off. See [Request Time Off](/help/time-tracking/request-time-off).
- Payroll: the paid hours that time off earns come from these same windows. See [Export Payroll for a Pay Period](/help/time-tracking/run-payroll).
- No windows: an employee with no windows counts as working Monday to Friday, 8 hours a day, for time off and holiday pay.

## Limits

- A window's end must be later than its start. The server checks this before it writes, so the saved hours stay as they were.
- A window with an empty start or end is not saved.
- A save covers the whole week. The windows on screen replace all of the employee's saved windows.
- A save holds at most 50 windows across the week.
